Black History Art & Essay Contest

South End Community Center and Stratford Library Teen Services
sponsor our annual Black History Month Contest and Celebration for ALL Stratford students in grades 6 – 8.

Essays or art must be handed in to the Stratford Library Teen Services Department by January 24, 2015.

All entries must include a cover page with  students name, age, grade, school, teacher and contact number.  Essays must be typed ( Teen PCs are available if needed for typing!)

First, Second and Third Prize winners will be formally announced and awarded their prizes on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at SQUARE ONE THEATER at 11 am

GRADES 6- 8 entrants: Please choose one of the following topics:

Essay 1: Write an essay about any African American past or present (both famous and not so famous) and why you think that he or she should receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Essay 2: Write an essay about any African American past or present (both famous and not so famous) and explain why you would like to grow up to be like that person.

Essay 3: African Americans have been depicted in many wonderful fiction books written by African American authors. Read a Young Adult Fiction title such as those listed on the back and imagine that you are one of the African American characters in the story, how would you relate to the same difficult situation that the character faces and why.

Poem: Write a poem about an African American person or a special event in African American history.

Art: Create a drawing or an original piece of work about an African American person or a special event in African American History.
