RHYMES AND FINGERPLAYS:

Boa Constrictor by Shel Silverstein
(To make this into a movement activity, sit on the floor with your feet straight out and a blanket beyond your feet. At each verse, move the blanket up to cover the body part that is mentioned.)

Oh, I’m being swallowed by a boa constrictor
A boa constrictor
A boa constrictor.
I’m being swallowed by a boa constrictor and I don’t like it – one bit.
Well, what do you know?
It’s nibblin’ my toe. (pull blanket up to cover toes)
Oh, gee,
It’s up to my knee. (pull blanket up to cover knees)
Oh my,
It’s up to my thigh. (pull blanket up to hips)
Oh, fiddle,
It’s up to my middle. (pull blanket up to chest)
Oh, heck,
It’s up to my neck. (pull blanket up to neck)
Oh, dread,
It’s up to my…. (pull blanket up over your head)

Five Little Birdies

Five little birdies singing in a tree (hold up 5 fingers)
Teasing Mr. Crocodile, “You can’t catch me!”
Along came the crocodile, quiet as can be… (hold arms straight out like a crocodile mouth)
SNAP! (open and close arms like a mouth)

Four little birdies singing in a tree (hold up 4 fingers)
Teasing Mr. Crocodile, “You can’t catch me!”
Along came the crocodile, quiet as can be… (hold arms straight out together like a crocodile mouth)
SNAP! (open and close arms like a mouth)

Three little birdies singing in a tree (hold up 3 fingers)
Teasing Mr. Crocodile, “You can’t catch me!”
Along came the crocodile, quiet as can be… (hold arms straight out together like a crocodile mouth)
SNAP! (open and close arms like a mouth)

Two little birdies singing in a tree (hold up 2 fingers)
Teasing Mr. Crocodile, “You can’t catch me!”
Along came the crocodile, quiet as can be… (hold arms straight out together like a crocodile mouth)
SNAP! (open and close arms like a mouth)

One little birdie singing in a tree (hold up 1 finger)
Teasing Mr. Crocodile, “You can’t catch me!”
Along came the crocodile, quiet as can be… (hold arms straight out together like a crocodile mouth)
SNAP! (open and close arms like a mouth)

No more birdies singing in the tree!

The Goops
by Gillette Burgess

The Goops they lick their fingers
And the Goops they lick their knives:
They spill their broth on the tablecloth
Oh, they lead disgusting lives!
The Goops they talk while eating,
And loud and fast they chew;
And that is why I’m glad that I
Am not a Goop, are you?
The Goops are gluttonous and rude
They gug and gumble with their food
They throw their crumbs upon the floor
And at dessert they tease for more.
They will not eat their soup or bread
But like to gobble sweets instead.
And this is why I oft decline
When I am asked to stay and dine.
