Library Take Out

Stratford Library is pleased to be able to offer Library Take Out, a contact-free way to borrow library materials.

  • You can place items on hold and pick them up by appointment.
  • Holds will be checked out to you and placed on the table outside the Main Street entrance of the library during your assigned time slot.
  • Everything will have a loan period of three weeks.
  • Return materials in the book drop only.
  • At this time, no fines are being charged for items borrowed after March 1.
  • Items will stay on your account for three days after you return them and be back-dated when they’re checked in. We need to quarantine the items for 3 days before putting them back in circulation. You will not be charged fines.

FAQ

Why Library Take Out only?
In the interest of everyone’s safety and health we are currently providing contact-free service.  Library staff have been trained in the safe handling of materials, wearing clean gloves and a mask at all times while handling your items.

How do I use Library Take Out?
Reserve items in the library catalog by clicking “Place a Hold” under the item or call 203-385-4164 during Library hours and a staff member will work with you to put items on hold.

What items can I check out?
Any item that is currently available at the Stratford Library. This includes Books, DVDs, Playaways, Books on CD, Magazines, CDs, and video games. No interlibrary loans are available at this time.
PLEASE NOTE: During this time we will have a 3 day quarantine for all returned items. Your patience is much appreciated.

How many items can I pick up?
For now, there is a limit of ten items per card, but you can pick up items for all members of your household at one time.

How will I know my holds are ready to be picked up?
You will receive notice either by email, if you provide one, or by phone call if you prefer. To support social distancing efforts, the library is operating with fewer staff on-site each day. Staff will fill your holds placed online as quickly as possible, but long wait times are anticipated. We appreciate your patience with this service model.

How can I pick my items up?
Once you receive the notification that your items are available, you must call or email the Check Out desk to schedule your appointment.
To call: 203-385-4160
To email: Contact Us Form, choose “Check Out Desk”

Where do I pick up my items?
At your scheduled pick up time go to the front of the library on Main St. A bag with your name will be left for you under a blue pop-up tent on a table. Please maintain 6 feet of distance between yourself and other patrons. Do not linger as other patrons will be scheduled to pick up their items as well.

Can I ask the staff to make item recommendations?
Yes! Fill out our What Do I Read Next form and we’ll give you a customized list of reading suggestions. Feel free to give us a call, email, or chat during our operational hours Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm. Children: 203-385-4165, Teens: 203-385-4167, Adult: 203-385-4164

Do I need a library card?
Yes. If you have library card already but aren’t sure if it’s valid, please give the Check Out desk a call at 203-385-4160. If you are a current resident of Stratford but do not have a library card, please either call at the above number or email us to inquire about obtaining one.

What if I have mobility issues and cannot leave my car?
Please let us know when you schedule a pickup time if you will need assistance and we will make arrangements with you.

What if I have fines that exceed the limit?
The Check Out desk can override any fine restrictions as needed. If you have lost items on your card, we can accept credit card payments over the phone and will work with you on a case by case basis.

Why are we using plastic bags?
We have opted to use disposable plastic bags to protect your privacy and to protect materials from the elements.

How do I return materials?
The Stratford Library has two book return drops. There is a free-standing drop in front of the library. There is a wall-mounted drop at the back entrance. These will remain open 24/7 until further notice. PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT place returns on the pickup table.

I returned my items and they’re still on my card. What’s going on?
We are quarantining items for three days before we put them back into circulation. We are not charging fines and items will be backdated upon check in. This is for everyone’s safety and in keeping with best practices for libraries from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
